Shopping for baby clothes is one of those things that looks simple until you actually start doing it.

You walk into a store or start scrolling online, and suddenly there are so many choices. Different fabrics, different labels, different styles  and of course, plenty of very cute prints.

It is easy to choose something simply because we love how it looks. And there is nothing wrong with that. Dressing our little ones is part of the fun of being a parent.

But babies spend a lot of time in their clothes. They sleep in them, feed in them, crawl around in them and sometimes stay in the same outfit for hours. So it is worth looking at a few things beyond the design.

Here are some simple things parents can keep in mind.

Start by checking what the fabric is actually made of

We often see words like “cotton”, “cotton blend”, “made with cotton” or “100% cotton” when shopping for baby clothes.

They may sound quite similar, but they don't always mean the same thing.

Take a few seconds to check the fabric composition label. If it says 100% cotton, then the textile fibre content is cotton. If it says 70% cotton and 30% polyester, for example, then you know it is a blend.

It sounds like a small detail, but getting into the habit of reading the label helps you understand what you are actually buying.

Give the fabric a good feel

Most parents naturally do this anyway. We pick up a baby outfit and immediately feel the fabric between our fingers.

Softness is important, especially for clothing that will sit against a baby's skin for long periods. But don't stop at the first touch.

Stretch the fabric gently. Look at how it falls. Feel the inside too.

Sometimes a garment feels wonderfully soft on the outside, but the seams, labels or stitching on the inside feel quite different.

After all, your baby experiences the inside of the clothing not the pretty side we see.

Turn the clothes inside out

This is probably something many of us don't think about when we are shopping.

Turn the garment inside out and have a look.

Are the seams neat? Are there loose threads? Is there anything rough that might rub against the skin? Does the stitching look secure?

A beautiful print can make us fall in love with an outfit, but good workmanship is just as important.

It only takes a few seconds to check.

We have hot and humid days, sudden rain, air-conditioned shopping malls, cold hospital rooms and bedrooms that may have the air-conditioning running throughout the night.

So rather than thinking only about whether an outfit looks warm or cozy, think about how practical the fabric and design will be in your baby's everyday environment.

Breathable, comfortable clothing and sensible layering can make it much easier to adjust as your baby's surroundings change.

Imagine changing a diaper at 2 a.m.

This is one of the best tests for baby clothing.

An outfit can look absolutely adorable on the hanger. But ask yourself: Would I still love this outfit during a half-awake diaper change in the middle of the night?

Where are the buttons or snaps?

Do you need to remove almost the entire outfit just to change the diaper?

Is it easy to get your baby's arms and legs in and out?

Little design details can make a surprisingly big difference once you start using the clothes every day.

For newborns especially, simple and practical often wins.

Check the little details

Buttons, bows and decorative pieces can make baby clothes beautiful, but give them a quick check before buying.

Make sure anything attached to the garment feels secure. Look at zippers and fastenings too, particularly around areas that may come into contact with your baby's skin.

And as your baby grows and becomes more active, these little checks become even more important.

Don't fill the cupboard with one size

This is a very easy mistake to make, especially when preparing for your first baby.

Those tiny newborn outfits are hard to resist.

But babies grow incredibly quickly, and every baby grows at a different pace. Some will stay in newborn sizes for a while, while others seem to outgrow them almost overnight.

Having a reasonable number of pieces across a few sizes can be more practical than buying too much of one size.

You can always buy more later once you know what works best for your baby.

Wash new clothes before the first wear

Even when something is brand new, it has already had quite a journey before reaching your baby's wardrobe.

Fabric is manufactured, printed or dyed, stitched, packed, transported, stored and handled before you eventually bring it home.

Giving new baby clothes a wash before the first wear is a simple habit worth having. Just follow the garment's care instructions and use laundry products suitable for your family's needs.

It also gives you a chance to see how the garment feels after washing because baby clothes are going to be washed a lot.

Price doesn't tell you everything

It is easy to assume that a more expensive piece of baby clothing must automatically be better.

That isn't always the best way to judge it.

Whether something is affordable or premium, you can still ask the same questions.

What is it made from? How does it feel? How is it stitched? Is it practical? Will my baby be comfortable wearing it?

Once you start paying attention to these things, choosing baby clothes becomes much easier.

There is no perfect baby outfit

Every baby is different, and so is every family.

Some parents love sleepsuits. Others prefer rompers. Some babies seem perfectly happy in almost anything, while others may be more particular about certain fabrics, fits or fastenings.

The point isn't to make parents worry about every piece of clothing they buy.

It is simply about knowing what to look for.
